ASEAN Artist Residency in Jakarta for Thai & Vietnamese artists

ASEAN calls for their first round of Thai and Vietnamese artists seeking to participate in their Jakarta-based residency.

ASEAN ARTIST RESIDENCY
This program aims to provide arts and cultural opportunities for the ASEAN artist community by providing studio space, exhibition space, public programs, and other promotional activities for artists while they work in the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. Under this program, one artist will be chosen to represent each of the 10 Southeast Asian countries and are expected to produce an artwork each for the permanent ASEAN Collection over a one-month period. Artists are expected to create works in an open studio format and participate in activities and events as requested.

APPLICATION

Artists will be required to provide the following:

  • Current Artist CV (CV should clearly state the artist name, address, email, phone number, nationality, and art-related activities in which you have participated, including exhibitions, art talks, performances, etc. The CV should also include a short artist bio.)
  • Proposal of 300 to 500 words stating the artist’s intent while participating in the ASEAN Artist Residency, addressing specifically the deepening of mutual understanding across ASEAN cultures and the exploration of an ASEAN identity
    Digital file of artwork portfolio (no larger than 10 MB)

Selection Criteria

  • Artists who are recognized by their peers to have sufficient experience in presenting their artwork in this context
  • Artists must be based in and hold nationality from one of the following countries or regions: Thailand or Viet Nam
  • Artists must have sufficient proficiency in English to communicate and to carry out the proposed project
  • Artists must be in good health and not require any special medical attention. Artists with disabilities are welcome to apply.
  • Artists must be at least 18 years old
  • Applications must be received by 6 pm on Monday 10 June 2019.

SUPPORT

ASEAN will provide the following support:

  • 1-month accommodation
  • Return airfare within Southeast Asia
  • Artwork production costs / USD 2,000
  • Daily stipend for 30 days / USD 100 per day
  • Studio space
  • ASEC security clearance for the period of residency
  • Presentation of artwork at the ASEAN Gallery

REQUIREMENTS

  • At a minimum, the artist must produce a painting in acrylic, batik, Chinese brush, collage, crayon, ink, mixed media, oil, watercolor, or any other media are accepted. Collages, two-dimensional embossed paintings, and three-dimensional paintings are also acceptable. Other mediums may be acceptable subject to selection committee approval.
  • The artwork must not exceed 150 x 200 cm in size.
  • In principle, ASEAN accepts no family members or assistants to accompany the artist
  • The artist is required, in principle, not to return to their home country or to visit other countries during the period of the residency.

Other requirements are restricted to the following:

  • Slide presentation/floor talk/panel discussion about artistic practice
  • Conducting tours/discussions for visiting VIPs, art and community groups, and ASEAN staff in the studio
  • Visits to community groups and/or schools
  • Attendance to events or functions by the host country

Agreement

An Agreement will be signed by both parties, outlining the rights and responsibilities of the Artist in Residence and ASEAN as well as the specific terms and conditions of the residency. If this Agreement is breached by either party, the residency may be terminated. The Agreement will be based on the project proposal.

SELECTION COMMITTEE

The Thai resident is to be chosen by a selection panel comprising of the following:

  • Prof. Dr. Apinan Poshyananda – Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Bangkok Art Biennale 2018
  • Amb. Phasporn Sangasubana – Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Thailand to ASEAN
  • Mr. Benjamin Milton Hampe – Consultant, ASEAN Gallery

The Vietnamese resident is to be chosen by a selection panel comprising of the following:

  • Dinh Q. Lê – Artist and Co-Founder, Sàn Art
  • H.E. Amb. Tran Duc Binh – Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to ASEAN
  • Mr. Benjamin Milton Hampe – Consultant, ASEAN Gallery
