PRESS RELEASE (26-7-2022, NAY PYI TAW)
The Foreign Ministry protests and rejects in the strongest terms on the statements issued by certain countries and regional/ international organisations
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has observed statements issued by certain countries and regional/international organisations with respect to the verdicts of four convicts who were given death sentences in accordance with the Penal Code and the Counter-Terrorism Law of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as they were found to be guilty of masterminding, arranging and committing brutal and inhumane terror acts and murders which have resulted in the deaths of many innocent civilians.
The Government of Myanmar has taken legal actions against these four convicts in line with the Penal Code and the Counter-Terrorism Law of Myanmar with a view to maintaining rule of law and peace and stability of the State as well as for ensuring public safety.
The provisions of international counter-terrorism laws and agreements reject and condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations under any circumstances and situations, and also state to take effective legal actions against those who committed terrorist activities.
Countries and international organisations should practise and strictly adhere to the fundamental principles of respecting the sovereignty, equality, and non-interference in internal affairs of other states in the conduct of international relations.
As regards the present cases, the incumbent Government which has been vested the three pillars of powers and authorities by the State Constitution (2008), has effectively taken legal actions against terrorist acts in accordance with the existing laws. The Ministry cautions that such concerns and criticisms on the Myanmar government’s legal actions could be tantamount to interfering the internal affairs of the country and indirectly abetting terrorism. Therefore, the Ministry strongly protests and rejects such one-sided statements that neglect the deaths of numerous innocent lives and injuries as well as destruction of education, health and economic infrastructures.
